Artist Statement

Packing materials are the fat of the object world. Separated from something that needs protection, they are just extra stuff that gets in the way. I am obsessed with them both formally and conceptually; they have been at the center of my practice for 25 years. I am interested in their proximity to total emptiness, their purely supporting role in the world of objects, and their potential as a symbol of safety and security. I approach these ideas in sculptures and installations that comment on the stability of the built environment as package and the instability of our bodies contained within it.
